Who could use a sweet, old-fashioned Broadway love story this morning? Well, I have one for you. Evan Hansen is engaged… to Evan Hansen! Ben Platt asked his boyfriend Noah Galvin to marry him. So what’s the Dear Evan Hansen connection? Ben originated the role on Broadway (and then unfortunately reprised it for the film version). When Ben stepped down in 2017, Noah replaced him as Evan. And instead of letting petty rivalry get in the way, Ben and Noah became close. In 2020, they decided to give love a shot. Last Friday, they decided to give forever a shot.
Ben Platt and Noah Galvin are making it for forever.
The actors, who have both played the lead in Dear Evan Hansen on Broadway, are engaged, they announced on Instagram Friday.
Sharing photos from the proposal and highlighting the ring, Platt, 29, wrote in the caption, “he agreed to hang out forever.” On his page, Galvin, 28, wrote, “I said yeehaw and then cried for like 7 hours.”
After Platt stepped down from the titular role in the Tony-winning musical, Galvin was announced as his replacement in November 2017. From there, the two developed a close friendship, which eventually blossomed into a romance a few years later.
The couple confirmed their relationship status in May 2020, when Galvin appeared on an episode of the Little Known Facts with Ilana Levine podcast.
“We were friends for five years and right before the pandemic, we finally decided to really give it a shot. We kind of skated around it for a long time,” Platt later told Kelly Clarkson of how their relationship developed over the years.
Platt, who currently stars in the movie The People We Hate at the Wedding on Prime Video, told Out magazine in 2021 that he’d found “a partner that I really love.” He said Galvin “has a really unique ability to help me to … be present where I am and to make the life that’s happening day to day too wonderful to not want to be on the ground for it.”
“To help me to … be present where I am and to make the life that’s happening day to day too wonderful to not want to be on the ground for it,” we should all be so lucky to have someone describe us like this. Man, can you imagine how fun this wedding is going to be? It’ll be wall to wall singing. More importantly, if the announcement is anything to go off of, it will be filled with joy and that’s what a wedding should be.
Now, for the shallow part – the ring Ben proposed with is gorgeous. I love the sleek design. I made the unfortunate choice of clicking on the designer’s IG page and OMG did my Christmas list get a lot longer. Noah could put a simple wedding band with it or keep it as a single ring. It’s a flexible choice, very sophisticated. Ben and Noah make a lovely couple and they are clearly thrilled to be walking down this road together. Congratulations and many happy years together.
I watched Ben’s latest project, The People We Hate at the Wedding and kind of liked it. It was more maudlin than I expected. Not that that’s bad, but it felt shunted in for effect in places. But the cast carried the film. They have a great chemistry and at the end, I was rooting for all of them. Maybe the sequel can be a reenactment of Ben and Noah’s wedding.
