Peter was born in Wellington, New Zealand, the son of Gwendolene Joan (Ruck) and William Arthur “Bill” Jackson. His parents were English immigrants. He is married to New Zealand screenwriter, film producer, and lyricist Fran Walsh, with whom he has two children. Peter and Fran have worked together on their movies.

Peter’s paternal grandfather was named William John Jackson.

Peter’s maternal grandfather was Walter Ruck (the son of Walter James Halsey and Alice Elizabeth Ruck). Peter’s grandfather Walter was born in Monmouth, Monmouthshire, Wales. Peter’s great-grandfather Walter was born in Bushey, Hertfordshire, England. Alice was born in Monmouth, the daughter of Enoch Ruck, from Ross-on-Wye, Herefordshire, England, and of Charlotte Rowles, who was from Newport, Newport, Wales.
